Forgetting to look around him, lost in translation in a book instead of trusting the world he's visiting :)

john4jack from Corvallis, Oregon, United States

Caroline - you have gotten quite a conversation going. When I used to backpack the high mountains of the American West, I had mixed feelings about guide books. There is a parallel with camera manuals.

willow from Chelsea, United States

Gotta love a tourist! Good capture.

20 Apr 2009 1:22am

Photosanity from Folsom, United States

Another fantastic capture - I have to ask a few questions. 1) are you capturing these in B&W mode through the camera or using some software to convert after the fact 2) are you in stealth mode with your camera when capturing these photographs? The people for the most part seem totally oblivious to you. --- I would love to try to capture such wonderful street scenes but I am afraid people will get upset or change what they are doing when the camera gets pointed at them. Teach me please!

20 Apr 2009 2:41am

@Photosanity: Thank you:-)
1. yes I have my camera in B&W mode as I think the outcome is better than converting with sofware.
2. Sorry I don't know what stealth mode is (perhaps you could tell me:)
I think the trick is to be bold and not to worry...most people don't seem to notice and if they do they don't think that you are really taking a shot of them!! If you start by going somewhere busy and perhaps with lots of tourists i think it helps!!!! I don't have an SLR but I do have a 15x optical zoom which helps tho I have to make sure it is in focus so it takes a bit of time!
I was just like you until I took the challenge of one of our am3 friends electroblogs and i ended up really enjoying and coming out with shots like this that i could not believe!!!
I hope this helps...go on...give it a go:-)

Liang from San Francisco, United States

dj.tigersprout from New York City, USA, United States

looks like the adventure is about to begin!! i love reading these travel books and then arriving in the new foreign location -- there is something fascinating about imagining how something is, and then finally seeing how it is in real life when you experience it!! lovely framing!!

Craig@Random Ramblings from Herts, United Kingdom

Super street shot again, he does seem to have a wry smile, perhaps he saw you? Or was just enjoying the guide book? Anyhoo well observed!
