Twas a stormy day

Posted by Linerberry (Christchurch, New Zealand) on 20 January 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Yesterdays summer storm. This shot was taken at about 5pm. I could see the storm coming over the sea and had been made aware of it by my friends Tracy and Robert who live inland and to the South. They rang to tell me to put my car in the garage as the hail stones were marble size!!!
There was also a waterspout around Scarbrough/Sumner hill which is very close to me indeed!!! A missed photo opp!
Always thought I would like to be a "Storm Chaser"!

Very nice image, Liners. I wouldn't mind chasing storms if I knew for certain that I'd stay safe. I'd love to capture a tornado, but I'm too chicken!

EYES WIDE SHUT from The library of my soul, United Kingdom

Brace for impact! What a magnificent view, moody and menacing and yet so irrisistibly beautiful with the semi silhouettes. A superb photograph. I can't tell you the amount of storms I have actively walked out into during my life. The buzz, the feeling of Mother Natures power makes me feel glad to be alive, and charges my soul.

20 Jan 2009 2:49pm

@EYES WIDE SHUT: I totally agree and thank you for the comment:-)

I don't know how you would be as a storm chacer but I know you are great as a light chacer. You've captured very well the different grades of light in this stormy day.

Kathryn from Warburton, Australia

me too - ever since i saw Twister when i was a kid i have always wanted to be a storm chaser!! it's a cheesy fact i know! maybe we can go storm chasing togther one day in the future Liners!?!? haha it would be great - imagine the images!! when i go to uni next month i'm lucky enough to be able to study atmospheric science too so i guess it a little way there! haha. what a wonderful storm and you are very lucky to have this viewpoint to watch it happen! i like EYES WIDE SHUT's comment about how the power of a storm changes your soul - perfectly put!
we are having a crazy summer storm day here today - there's bushfires, duststorms, thunder and drenching horizontal rain - no waterspout though!

22 Jan 2009 4:47am

@Kathryn: Hay Kathryn, congrats on getting into Uni...though I had no doubt you would be accepted:-)
Yeah!!! Lets go storm chasing together...we would have so much fun and what photos we could get!
Sounds like your course will be great...what is it exactly?
Have fun my friend:-)

Kathryn from Warburton, Australia

yes we will definately have to do that one day!!!! it would be so fun!
With my course I actually went to uni for a 'pre-enrolment' session today - it seems so organised which is such an improvement on the uni that i went to before for my other course (that was a bachelor of arts majoring in literally NOTHING - just filled with random subjects like film, chinese, world religions and lots of photography!) - now this one is going to be a Bachelor of Science - majoring in Geoscience and minoring in Atmospheric Science, with some Astronomy squashed in for variety! cool ey?!?! I am so lucky!!! especially to get a second chance at it all!!
