@grouser: Thanks G. I don't think there is a coastal path system as such. This site shows the paths around the Port Hills were I live. A lot of the walking tracks both coastal and inland are owned by Department of Conservation and some of them you have to pay to go on! This is of course to protect the land and our wonderful National Parks. I'm lucky that the Port Hills and Banks Peninsula are all free:-)

@Observing: You can swim here Mike, I don't cos I'm not confident in the sea, but it is very popular with swimmers and surfers all around this bit of coast. I went for a paddle yesterday if that counts LOL!
