~Albatross~

Posted by Linerberry (Christchurch, New Zealand) on 2 December 2008 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

On the Otago Penninsula the Royal Albatross Colony is a sight to be seen!! I was lucky to get this shot as the guide told us it was a pair taking it in turns to look after the egg whilst the other went off for food. This was one of the rarely seen times when they were doing the change over! I tried to get one in flight but alas it was not meant to be.
The sight of a soaring albatross is unforgettable - held aloft on slim wings up to 3 metres (9'6") across, the great Albatross is capable of swooping speeds of more than 115kph.

Fantastic! How far away were you when you took this? Couldn't you have thrown a stone at them to make them fly? (Just kidding!!!! REALLY). Dunno about these but you are one lucky bird yourself! And me the first to make a comment.

@YouKnowWho: You are on the ball this morning my dear Sis!! You must have been typing this as I was reponding to your comment 2 days ago!!! Just back from the big smoke of Auckland, it late but I had to check me blog and I'm glad i did:-) I was in a watch tower as you're not allowed to get to close, but I was lucky with my zoom that it didn't blur or distort. Its at times like these when one really craves an SLR with zoom lens....oh and it was taken through glass, so not bad I thought:-) Ta chucky egg:-) Really must speak soon!

Beautiful capture, Liners. I see the main subject is ringed - I wonder how common that is in the colony.
