Trip to Kaikoura 1 of 12...Just had a great trip to Kaikoura, 2hrs North of Christchurch. Walking on the beach we spotted these little fellas 'Pied Shag' and they really loved to show off, perfect for me:-)

oh yeah... I'm looking! How brilliant, I love that the only bright colour is around the "shag's" eye (is it really called that LOL), lovely clarity in this image and great composition, well done honey!

@Kylie Greenan: Thanks a lot Ky:-) He is a smart fella! And yes he really is a "Shag" and I was able to get lots of 'Shag' photos:-)) Now now! Did you know we have 7 species of 'Shag' in NZ...all of them different! Now I could go on and get really silly....but I won't! Glad you like it Ky:-))

jamesy from christchurch, New Zealand

Great shot you certainly got your timing right as he was drying out his wings. I must laugh as I have a shag for tomorrows photo. I think he is a different type he certainly doesn't have the beautiful eye shadow that this one does.

28 Aug 2008 11:40am

@jamesy: Thanks J...I've just seen your shag for tomorrow and left you a comment. He is a different Shag. I have another early next week so we will have deffinately done the 'shag' this week!

San G. from Encino, California, United States

Thanks for this great shot! The bird's wings remind me of tiles on a roof, and the eye is so beautifully colored. I purposefully avaoided looking at your home country. I guessed New Zealand because the bird was so exotic and yet sturdy ... "no messin' around!" Are there Bower Birds there too? Terrific shot, crisp and clear.

30 Aug 2008 6:28am

@San G.: Thanks for visiting and your lovely comment. Well guessed NZ. I don't think we have Bowerbirds, they are mainly in Australia, I haven't come across them here.

Jean-Michel from Brussels, Belgium

Just drying up ! I love that picture ! She has the same eyes color as a toucan I've seen in Brazil ! ;-)
